Why Michael Floyd Signing Elsewhere Would Be Very Good For the Patriots

Michael Floyd

The Patriots Career of Michael Floyd

The highlight of Michael Floyd’s brief Patriots career was his jarring block on the Dolphins’ Tony Lippett that broke Julian Edelman for a 77-yard touchdown. He was picked up on waivers from the Arizona Cardinal after being found intoxicated, and asleep in his car in December.

With the acquisition of Brandin Cooks, there’s really no room at the inn for Floyd, who was inactive for both the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. He was insurance during the playoffs, and now that insurance could pay off.

Floyd signing with another team could have an added perk. A free 6th round or better draft choice in next year’s (2018) draft. It’s being reported by ESPN that the Detroit Lions might be a good landing spot for Floyd.

Compensation Pick Status this Season

Thus far this offseason, the Patriots have lost Martellus Bennett, Logan Ryan, Barkevious Mingo, and Jabaal Sheard. They’ve signed Stephon Gilmore, Lawrence Guy and Rex Burkhead.

At present that leaves them with a 4th round compensation pick. Chris Long signing elsewhere could net them a 7th rounder. Michael Floyd could fetch them an additional 6th rounder.

For those of you not familiar with the complicated, mystical process that is the NFL compensatory picks, you get picks based on the difference in value between those free agents you lose, and those you pick up. That’s the really simple version. If you want your PhD in the subject, you can click here.

What if they signed Darrelle Revis?

Since Revis was cut by the Jets, he doesn’t qualify for draft pick compensation. So his signing would have no effect.

Past Pats Draft Pick Compensation

The Patriots have been very, very good at using this system throughout the years.

Tom Brady, for example, was picked with one of the four compensatory picks the Patriots got in the 2000 draft for letting Tom Tupa, Todd Collins, Mark Wheeler and Dave Wohlabaugh go after the 1998 season.

In last year’s draft, Vincent Valentine, Elandon Roberts, and Ted Karras were all taken with compensatory picks; that they got from letting Darrelle Revis, Vince Wilfork, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Akeem Ayers walk after the 2014 season. The signing of Jabaal Sheard cancelled out Brandon Browner’s signing with the Saints.
